work

gabriel barlag makes sculptures, most wall sculptures of metal.

he often uses (patinated) zinc and metals combined with the materials lead and tin, materials that defend and refer to the impermanence.

the metal sculptures usually have an opening in the middle that the artist sees as a symbol for defending and spying.

from this kind of space the spider can take in the space unnoticed.

when an outsider wants to spy on him, he can use the opening as a space that gives him protection.

in short, intriguing metal sculptures with a rough lived skin, which due to their contemporary character would just as well fit into the design world.

space for the future

the work of gabriel barlag is a reflection of spaces or residences.

the form refers to the future that is experienced in this way.

the series of wall objects of gabriel barlag has a neo-futuristic character.

this is partly due to the fact that barlag has developed this series using computer models, which has led to a range of asymmetrical forms.

etienne boileau wrote at the time: 'they are less strict and measured than their previous series of objects, but they remain unmistakably a very contemporary character that lies between visual art and industrial design.

the alloy of tin and lead with which he has worked his metal objects, causes a white metal skin.

the playful-looking forms carry a reference to a new meaningful visual language '.

the skin of the material refers to the past. like an archaeological find, weathered and damaged.

these images also see gabriel barlag as a translation of the infinite in the space of the universe.

there they could take a place and be part of the planets, perhaps as spaceships, whereabouts.

it could also be possible to place one of the images in a larger version on the earth's surface on the planet earth, for example on a sandy plain or a grassy plain.

an image in which the spectator can stay and experience how such an empty space is with the sounds that such a metallic image produces.

in recent years, gabriel barlag has been able to develop his work in such a way that there is a possibility to transform the images into a living-work space that is completely self-reliant.

thus, totally independent from the outside world, ecologically sound.
