after a job in education and study psychology, simon haringa followed his passion: film and photography.

in 1996 he graduated from the dutch film and television academy in amsterdam (nl).

since then he has worked as an audiovisual media teacher and documentary maker.

The central theme in his work is man's search for a better and more beautiful world or the loss thereof.

while in his films people play a leading role, the emphasis in his photos is on the surrounding environment.

in his ‘auto-mobile’ photo series, he photographs with a mobile phone.

his fascination lies not with the perfect shaping of images but with coincidence.

it is not the technical possibilities of a camera or the ideal position that determine the result of his photography, but his individual way of looking.

filtering images has always been an automatism for simon and he is now also recording this process.

during normal, daily activities, he makes visual notes of the world around him and collects them in diaries.

light, frame and a zoom lens are the only tools.

a certain unpredictability and imperfection of the images cause alienation.

as a result, the photos have their own reality and rather represent a feeling.

his photo series ‘amsterdam-mobile’ is a collection of images that show how simon moves through amsterdam (nl).

they tell the story of one of the many people on the move in the city.

together they form a personal travel report, illustrated with contemporary postcards.
