work

in the work of rob van leeuwen the connection with the earth and collaboration with nature plays a major role.

traditional artist materials are replaced by natural matter like sand, clay, lime, wood and stone.

traditional tools are replaced by his hands and the forces of nature.

the elements earth, water, fire and air can manifest themselves literal.

natural matter from all over the earth was collected in his studio to become a part of his creations.

over the years the desire to work with the earth in a more direct way became stronger.

eventually this led to the panta rhei project he started in 2014.

living near to the mouth of the river rhine, he made the connection with the source of the river, following the artistic stream that was initiated.

the artworks of rob van leeuwen presented by gallery 9 are part of the panta rhei project.

most of the matter used has a direct link with the river rhine.

the base he used is gypsum board.

the matter on the frame is sediment collected above the source of the river rhine.

rob van leeuwen

born in 1959 in westzaan, north-holland (nl)

lives in noordwijk, south-holland (nl)

works in noordwijk, south-holland (nl)

at first art was no part of the life of rob van leeuwen.

he started his professional life as an aircraft ground engineer at klm (royal dutch airlines).

this gave him the chance to explore the world.

a deep respect and love for the earth in its purest form was born here, together with the need to share this in an artistic way.

in the phase of life he was in at that time, art school was not an option.

this gave him the chance to develop his own technique which suited his need for expression.
